Makha Bucha Day originated from a significant eve1nt that occurred over 2,500 years ago at Veluvana Monastery in Rajgir, India, which had four special characteristics, known as “Chaturangkasannipat”, namely:
- 1,250 monks assembled without prior arrangement
- All the monks were Arahants
- All the monks were ordained directly by the Buddha (Ehi-bhikkhu ordination)
- The Buddha delivered the Ovadapatimokkha, which is a fundamental teaching of Buddhism
The teaching that the Buddha delivered on that day is considered the essence of Buddhism, which can be summarized into three fundamental principles:
- Abstain from doing evil
- Do good completely
- Purify the mind The Buddha delivered the Ovadapatimokkha, which is a fundamental teaching of Buddhism
Buddhist Practices on Makha Bucha Day and reflect on the Dharma teachings of the Buddha. The practices that Buddhists commonly perform on this day include:
1. Merit-making, Alms Offering, and Listening to Dharma In the morning, Buddhists often go to temples to make merit through alms offering and present donations to the Sangha to cultivate merit and listen to Dharma sermons to enhance their knowledge of Buddhist teachings.
2. Observing Precepts and Meditation Observing precepts is a guideline for living a good life. Generally, Buddhists observe the Five Precepts regularly, but on important days such as Makha Bucha Day, some may observe the Eight Precepts to train themselves in discipline and reduce defilements. Meditation or practicing concentration is another popular activity as it helps calm the mind and reach the truth of Buddhism.
3. Candle Procession In the evening of Makha Bucha Day, Buddhists participate in walking around the ordination hall with candles by walking clockwise three times while holding flowers, incense, and candles, symbolizing respect for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, which commemorates the Buddha’s teachings and establishes commitment to righteous practice.
4. Abstaining from Vices and Purifying the Mind Makha Bucha Day is an excellent opportunity for Buddhists to abstain from vices such as drinking alcohol, gambling, and doing things that violate moral principles, so that life becomes peaceful and progresses toward spiritual development.
In the present day, although the world changes rapidly, the Buddha’s teachings remain a guideline that helps us live a peaceful and balanced life. Makha Bucha Day is therefore not only an important religious day but also a day that reminds us to reflect and develop ourselves for the better every day.
🙏 Happy Makha Bucha Day. May everyone have a pure mind filled with virtue 🙏
